Make a dinosaur sensory tray to delight the paleontologists of tomorrow! If you’re looking for new ways to play with favourite dinosaur toys, or activities for dino-mad kids, this inspiring sensory play tray is packed with ideas for how to bring excitement into your next day at home with the children. Even better, you’ll find most of the things you need in your kitchen cupboards and playroom!

\nDinosaur Sensory Play Essentials (Bonus: You’ve Already Got Most Of It!)

\n

You don’t need to go on a huge shopping spree to create sensory trays – there’s so much you can use in your kitchen, garden and toy shelf. The only essentials needed to make a dinosaur themed play tray are simple: some toy dinosaurs (we used a mixture of types and sizes, including these wooden dinosaurs and a tray or collection of containers.

$\"\"$

What Kind of Tray is Best for Sensory Play?

The content of the tray is far more important than the tray itself. A sensory play tray [LINK: https://inspiremyplay.com/collections/the-original-playtray/products/playtray] works really well, but if you haven’t got one then you can also try:
Chip and dip tray (available from supermarkets during the summer, or look in charity shops)
Snack tray
Divided plate

A collection of small bowls (e.g. toddler-sized bowls) or sandwich/food storage boxes
Clean, dry food packaging e.g. yoghurt pots, dip pots, quiche trays, ice cream tubs

Muffin tin

If you choose to use a collection of small pots, you may want to group them together in a deep-sided tray or large box.

You will need:

A play tray, divided tray or collection of small pots (see below for ideas of what to use if you don’t have a play tray)
Dinosaur figures

A selection of spoons, tongs, brushes, mini tools, paintbrushes, scoops and sticks

A magnifying glass (optional)

A selection of ‘fillings’ (see below)

$\"\"$

How To Build A Dinosaur Play Tray

Once you’ve chosen what kind of container or tray to use and found the all-important dinosaur toys, it’s time to work on the fillings. You don’t have to use everything suggested – just including a few different textures and colours for your child and their dinosaurs to explore will create a fun activity to keep them busy and stimulated for ages!

Some of these need a little extra preparation – you can find the instructions for those below. But for lots of them, you just pour, add utensils and dino toys, then wait to see some happy kids!

If you use wooden figures and utensils in this activity, wipe them with a damp cloth when you have finished. They might not like being submerged in jelly for too long!

Make sure that your child understands that none of these items are to be eaten, and that dried pasta, beans, peas and seeds can be a choking hazard. Your child should not be left unattended with this activity.

How To Make Taste Safe, All-Natural Swamp Slime

Something’s lurking in the slimy swamp… Can your child work out which prehistoric creatures are underneath that murky goo?!

There’s nothing nasty in this slime – no borax, no activator and no chemicals. It’s easy to make and uses simple ingredients you’ll find in your kitchen or supermarket shelf. Be warned, you do need to start this recipe a few hours before you need it, or ideally the night before. This one might get a bit messy so make sure you play with it away from precious carpets, sofas and other items – but it’s not as bad to clean up as other slimes and really is a sensory explosion!

This chia seed slime is taste-safe, but it is not meant to be eaten.

\nChia Slime Ingredients\n

2 tablespoons dried chia seeds

250ml water

A few drops of food colouring (optional, any colour you like)

Cornflour (about 5 tablespoons)

Mixing bowl

Spoon

\nChia Slime Instructions\n

\n
Put two tablespoons of chia seeds into a bowl, add 250ml water and stir.
\n
\n
Cover the bowl and pop it in the fridge for a few hours, or overnight. It will thicken into a slimy gel.
\n
\n
Add a few drops of food colouring and stir.
\n
\n
Add cornflour, one tablespoon at a time, and stir. Keep adding spoons of cornflour until the slime is the thickness you like.
\n

How To Make Dinosaur Fossils

Fossils are a special part of any dinosaur play or exploration, and making your own to add to a sensory tray couldn’t be simpler. Try this on your own so children are surprised by what they uncover, or double the recipe if your little helpers want to get involved in fossil-making, too!

\nSalt Dough Ingredients

\n

75g table salt

150g flour

75ml water

Mixing bowl
Spoon
Rolling pin
Biscuit or fondant cutters – dinosaurs, bones and dinosaur skeletons work especially well, but aren’t essential

Lined baking sheet

\nSalt Dough Fossils Instructions\n

\n
Add the flour, salt and water to a bowl and stir until it combines into a dough.
\n
\n
Knead the mixture for a few minutes until it becomes smooth.
\n
\n
Roll it out to 0.5 cm - 1 cm thickness and use cutters to create bones, dinosaurs and skeletons, or mould the dough into small bone shapes.
\n
\n
Place the dough creations onto a lined baking sheet and bake at 50℃, or on your oven’s lowest setting, for about three hours.
\n
\n
Leave to cool.
\n
\n
Place into a pot or section of the play tray and cover with something dry, like play sand, couscous or lentils. Provide scoops and brushes so your young archaeologist can discover what’s hidden inside!
\n

$\"\"$

Jelly Dino Dig

This wibbly-wobbly excavation activity is sure to get paleontologists-in-training giggling!

\nJelly Dino Dig Ingredients\n

Jelly cubes or powder

Jug

Spoon

Hot water

Fridge

Small, clean plastic dinosaurs

\nJelly Dino Dig Instructions\n

\n
Follow the instructions on the jelly packaging to make it into a liquid and leave it to cool for a few minutes
\n
\n
Place the dinosaurs into a pot or section of the play tray.
\n
\n
Pour the liquid jelly over the dinosaurs and leave it to set. Provide scoops and spoons so your dino experts can dig in!
\n

Dino Egg

Add a mysterious egg shell to your play scene, then ask young dino fans what they think might have hatched out? Could it be a terrific T.rex, an enormous Brachiosaurus or a teeny Velociraptor?

\nDino Egg Ingredients\n

2-3 eggs

Sharp knife

Bowl

Kitchen paper

\nDino Egg Instruction\n

\n
Carefully cut the top off an egg by tapping a sharp knife firmly into the shell. Pour the egg out of the small hole. Repeat with the remaining eggs.
\n
\n
Gently wash the eggs, inside and out, and use kitchen paper to dry them.
\n

You can use the egg whites and yolks however you like – dinosaur cupcakes, perhaps?!

Every December, stockings across the country fill up with small things that are loved for an hour and forgotten by Boxing Day. It does not have to be that way. This guide gathers our favourite stocking fillers under £10: small wooden toys and soft toys from Tender Leaf Toys, Mentari and ThreadBear that are designed to keep being played with in January, at Easter and well into next year.

Every single one costs £10 or less. None of them needs batteries. And each was chosen for one reason: it gives a child something to come back to.

What makes a stocking filler last beyond Christmas?

Having watched a lot of children play with a lot of toys, we think the stocking fillers that last share at least one of four qualities.

They start something. A single wooden animal becomes the first of a collection that grows at every birthday.

They join something. A small toy that adds to a dolls house, train set or play kitchen gets played with every time the bigger toy does.

They can be solved again. Good puzzles and pattern toys reward a second, third and fiftieth go, and get more interesting as children grow.

They fit into real life. Role play toys that copy what grown-ups do every day keep their appeal long after the novelty of Christmas morning wears off.

Here is how each of those looks in a stocking.

1. Wooden animals that start a collection

Our hand-finished wooden animals cost £2.50 to £5.50 each, which makes them the perfect stocking filler, and the perfect start to a collection that can grow for years. Children name them, sort them, line them up and invent whole worlds for them. They are the very definition of open-ended play.

Start a collection

\n $\"Tender$ \n

\nPolar Animal - Polar Bear £3.50\n

The start of a ten-piece arctic world. Add a narwhal at birthdays and a snow hare next Christmas.

\n $\"Tender$ \n

\nFir Tops £7\n

Three little fir trees and a fox to turn any train track, dolls house garden or windowsill into a forest.

\nShop now\n

For a wintry stocking, the polar collection is hard to beat: the Arctic Fox (£3), Snow Hare (£3), King Penguin (£3) and Narwhal (£3.50). Dinosaur fans will want the Tyrannosaurus Rex (£5.50), and farm lovers can start with the Sheep (£3) and Pig (£3.50). There are woodland, safari and coastal animals too, so there is always another one to add next time.

2. Small toys that add to the big present

If a dolls house, play kitchen or train set is waiting under the tree, the stocking is the perfect place for something that belongs to it. It builds excitement on Christmas morning, and it means the small gift is played with every time the big one is.

Add to the big present

\n $\"Mentari$ \n

\nRabbit Hutch Pet Set £9.50\n

A hutch, three rabbits and their dinner. A small gift that makes a dolls house feel more like home.

\nMini Gigi Dolls House Rag Doll £10\n

An embroidered rag doll on a bendy frame, sized to sit on Tender Leaf dolls house furniture.

Our doll family comes in four tones, Ivory, Caramel, Almond and Mocha, with a mother, father, boy and girl in each, sold separately at £7. Children can build a household that looks like their own, one figure at a time. The Mentari Doll Family With Dog and Doll Family With Cat (£6.50 each) are lovely too, and Fir Tops add a little forest to any train track.

Browse our dolls houses and dolls house furniture for the full world these little pieces belong to.

3. Puzzles that get solved again and again

A good puzzle is not finished once it is finished. Children return to the ones they have mastered for the quiet satisfaction of getting it right, and the best puzzles offer a new challenge each time.

Puzzles with staying power

\n $\"Mentari$ \n

\nDino-Saws £10\n

Three dinosaur jigsaws that mix and match into brand new creatures. A different dinosaur every time.

\nShop now\n

\n $\"Mentari$ \n

\nToy Colour Blocks £8\n

Four patterned cubes that hide six shapes. Toddlers stack them now and solve them later.

\nShop now\n

For children aged three and up, the Mentari Tangram Puzzle (£8) is a classic: seven pieces that make hundreds of shapes, and a puzzle many grown-ups enjoy too. Puzzles like these build spatial reasoning, patience and problem-solving, which is a lot to ask of something that fits in a stocking.

4. Toddler toys that grow with them

Toddlers change so quickly that many toys are outgrown within weeks. The ones that last are the ones that can be played with in more than one way. A one-year-old stacks and bangs. A two-year-old sorts and matches. A three-year-old counts and builds.

Grows with your toddler

\n $\"Mentari$ \n

\nCount and Match Peg board £9\n

Colours, shapes and first counting in one sturdy board that a toddler will keep coming back to.

\nShop now\n

The Stacking Kitten (£9) and Kitten On Wheels (£10) are two more lovely toddler stocking fillers that stay in play for a long time. Our gift guide to toys for toddlers has many more ideas.

5. Role play that becomes everyday play

Children are endlessly fascinated by what grown-ups do. Toys that let them copy real life, paying at the shop, baking in the kitchen, never really go out of fashion, because real life keeps giving them new ideas.

Everyday role play

\n $\"Mentari$ \n

\nCard Machine £8\n

Small does not have to mean throwaway

Cheap stocking fillers are often the least sustainable things we buy all year. Ours are designed to be the opposite. Every Tender Leaf Toys and Mentari piece is designed by our team in England, made from responsibly sourced rubberwood and finished with non-toxic, water-based colours. Each one is tested to EN71 safety standards, and our packaging is almost entirely plastic free.

That means a £3 wooden animal is built just as carefully as a £200 play kitchen. It is meant to be kept, played with and one day passed on.

Stocking fillers under £10: FAQs

What are good stocking fillers under £10?

Wooden animals, small puzzles, dolls house accessories and simple role play toys all make excellent stocking fillers under £10. Look for toys that start a collection or add to a bigger present, so they are played with long after Christmas.

How do I choose stocking fillers that will not be forgotten?

Choose open-ended toys that can be played with in more than one way, or that link to something your child already loves. A small figure for a dolls house will get far more play than a novelty toy.

Are wooden stocking fillers suitable for toddlers?

Yes, as long as you check the recommended age. Chunky wooden toys like peg boards, pattern blocks and stacking toys are designed for toddlers, while smaller figures and dolls house pieces are usually best from three years.

The chocolate is gone by breakfast, the little plastic toys are lost by lunchtime and, come Christmas Eve, there is nothing left of the countdown but a cardboard box with 24 empty doors. If that sounds familiar, a wooden toy advent calendar might be the change your family is looking for.

\n\n

The idea is simple. Instead of 24 things that disappear, you give 24 small moments that add up to something. One wooden animal at a time, an arctic world takes shape on the windowsill. Piece by piece, a train set grows across the floor. By the time Christmas Day arrives, your child has not just counted down. They have built something they will play with all year.

\n\n

Here is how to make a fill-your-own wooden advent calendar that is genuinely worth the countdown, with four themed ideas you can put together now.

\n\n

Why choose a wooden toy advent calendar?

\n\n

It builds towards something. Each day's toy joins the one before, so the excitement grows rather than resets. That sense of a collection coming together is one of the most satisfying parts of play for young children.

\n\n

It lasts beyond December. Wooden animals and play sets do not get eaten or snapped. They stay in the toy basket, ready for the next adventure, and very often get passed on.

\n\n

It is calmer. One small wooden toy invites a few quiet minutes of play before school, instead of a sugar rush or a squabble over who got the better plastic trinket.

\n\n

It is reusable. A fabric calendar, a set of drawers or 24 paper bags on a string can be filled again every year, with nothing to throw away in January.

\n\n

Idea 1: The Polar Countdown

\n\n

This is our favourite, and perfect for December. Wrap a polar animal on the first ten mornings, then the nine pieces of the Balancing Polar Circle, and children build a whole snowy world that turns into a family game in time for Christmas. Keep the shelf hidden and bring it out on Christmas Eve, so every animal has a home to go to.

\n\n

For the Polar Countdown

\n $\"Tender$ \n

\n Polar Animals Shelf Set\n £48\n

Ten wooden arctic animals and a little shelf to keep them on. Wrap the animals for Advent and save the shelf for Christmas Eve.

\n Shop now\n

\n $\"Tender$ \n

\n Balancing Polar Circle\n £25\n

Penguins, a polar bear, a walrus and an iceberg, all balancing on one disc. Nine pieces that become a family game.

\n Shop now\n

\n\n

Prefer to spread the cost? The animals are also sold singly, from Snow Hare (£3) and Arctic Fox (£3) to Narwhal (£3.50), Walrus (£4) and Orca (£5.50). The ten polar animals we sell singly come to £36.50 in total, so you can add the shelf later as a birthday present.

\n\n

Start with one

\n $\"Tender$ \n

\n Polar Animal - Polar Bear\n £3.50\n

Buying the animals one at a time? Start with the polar bear and build the arctic day by day.

\n Shop now\n

\n\n

Idea 2: The Train Set Countdown

\n\n

This one never fails with little engineers. Instead of giving a train set all at once on Christmas morning, wrap each piece separately. Track pieces come first, then the scenery, then the woodland animals and the chalet. Save the engine for Christmas Eve, and the whole railway is complete just in time for the big day.

\n\n

For the Train Set Countdown

\n $\"Tender$ \n

\n Treetops Train Set\n £40\n

Track, a train, woodland animals and a cosy chalet. Unwrap it piece by piece and it is ready to run by Christmas Eve.

\n Shop now\n

\n $\"Tender$ \n

\n Fir Tops\n £7\n

Three fir trees and a fox to turn the track into a forest. Four more little parcels for the countdown.

\n Shop now\n

\n\n

The Treetops Train Set has 22 pieces, and Fir Tops adds four more. Wrap two short track pieces together on busier mornings, and slot in a few activity days to make it stretch to 24.

\n\n

Idea 3: The Farmyard Countdown

\n\n

Farm animals are a toddler favourite, and they are ideal for children who are just starting to name and sort. Eleven animals bought singly come to £35: the Sheep, Pig, Cow, Donkey, Alpaca, Chicken, Rooster, Chicks, Goose, Mouse and the English Shepherd Dog to keep them all in order. Our wooden animals are suitable from three years.

\n\n

Idea 4: The Dolls House Countdown

\n\n

If a dolls house is waiting under the tree, the countdown is the perfect way to fill it before it even arrives. Wrap the four members of a Doll Family (£7 each), the pieces of the Rabbit Hutch Pet Set (£9.50), a Mini Gigi Dolls House Rag Doll (£10) and the Pet Dog Set (£15). On Christmas morning, the family, their pets and their visitor are all ready to move in.

\n\n

Our doll family comes in four tones, Ivory, Caramel, Almond and Mocha, so children can build a household that looks like their own.

\n\n

How to fill your own advent calendar: our tips

\n\n

Mix toy days with activity days. Not every day needs a present. A note that says \"bake gingerbread\", \"go on a frosty walk\" or \"write to Father Christmas\" is just as exciting, and keeps the cost down.

\n\n

Save the best for last. Plan the order so the countdown builds. The engine, the shelf or the final family member makes a perfect Christmas Eve finale.

\n\n

Wrap simply. Brown paper, string and a numbered luggage tag look beautiful and can mostly be recycled. Our toys arrive in packaging that is almost entirely plastic free, so there is very little waste to begin with.

\n\n

Make it part of the room. Hang your parcels along the mantelpiece or the banisters with wooden bunting above, and the countdown becomes part of how your home looks at Christmas.

\n\n

Display your countdown

\n $\"Tender$ \n

\n Winter Holiday bunting\n £16\n

Wooden toys made to be kept

\n\n

Every Tender Leaf Toys piece in these countdowns is designed by our team in England and made from responsibly sourced rubberwood, finished with non-toxic, water-based colours and tested to EN71 safety standards. They are built for years of play, which is exactly what makes them worth counting down to.

Wooden advent calendar FAQs

\n\n

What can I put in a wooden advent calendar?

\n\n

Small wooden animals, pieces of a train set or play set, dolls house figures and mini puzzles all work well. Mixing in activity days, such as baking or a winter walk, keeps the countdown special without filling every door with a present.

\n\n

How much does a toy advent calendar cost to fill?

\n\n

It depends on the theme. Our wooden animals start at £2.50, so a farmyard countdown can be filled for under £40, while a train set countdown that unwraps piece by piece comes to around £47.

\n\n

When does Advent start in 2026?

\n\n

Most advent calendars start on 1 December, which falls on a Tuesday in 2026. If you prefer the church calendar, Advent Sunday is 29 November 2026.

\n\n

What age is a wooden toy advent calendar suitable for?

\n\n

Most of the toys in these countdowns are suitable from three years. Always check the recommended age on each product, as some small pieces are not suitable for younger children.
